How MEPCO Distributes Electricity?

MEPCO receives electricity from the National Grid Station, which is managed by NTDC (National Transmission & Dispatch Company).

High-voltage transmission lines connect MEPCO to the national grid station, ensuring a steady power supply. At the MEPCO grid station, the voltage is stepped down before being distributed through feeder lines that connect the grid to local areas.

From the feeders, electricity flows to distribution transformers, which further reduce the voltage to a safe level for homes and commercial use. Finally, the consumer supply lines transfer electricity from transformers to houses, shops, and other establishments, ensuring a reliable power supply.

MEPCO Feeder System

A feeder is a power line that supplies electricity from a grid station to a specific area. MEPCO has thousands of feeders that ensure uninterrupted power distribution. The feeders are categorized as three category:

  1. Category A Feeder
This category experiences minimal MEPCO load shedding because the feeders have a high bill recovery rate and very few reports of electricity theft.
  2. Category B feeder
In this category, consumers experience moderate MEPCO load shedding, ranging from a minimum of 2 hours to a maximum of 4 hours.
  3. Category C Feerder
This is a low-category feeder that experiences more than 8 hours of load shedding. It primarily includes rural areas with higher power losses and lower bill recovery rates.

MEPCO manages load shedding at the feeder level, not at the grid station. Each feeder is categorized based on electricity theft and bill recovery, which determines the duration of power outages.

MEPCO Distribution Challenges

  • Power Theft
Electricity theft is a major issue in Pakistan, posing a significant challenge for distribution companies. The government of Pakistan has taken strict measures to combat electricity theft and ensure fair distribution of power.
  • Overloaded Transformers
Due to a limited number of transformers and a high number of consumers, transformers frequently fail, causing daily power outages. This remains a major challenge for MEPCO in ensuring a stable electricity supply.
  • Line Losses
As MEPCO covers a vast area, the transmission lines are extended over long distances, resulting in higher power losses during distribution.
  • Load Shedding
Load shedding refers to the scheduled or unscheduled power outages imposed by electricity distribution companies to balance the demand and supply of electricity. In Pakistan, load shedding has been a persistent issue, affecting households, industries, and businesses.
